Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720- 1778)

b

c
Born in Venice and trained there as an architect and engineer, Piranesi's studies also included perspective and stage design. These skills along with his knowledge of archaeology provided the foundation for his famous "Views of Rome" ("Vedute di Roma"), an ambitious series of 135 etchings produced over 35 years. Arguably the finest architectural etchings ever created, they proved so popular that they have been reprinted frequently. However, the ones offered here are the fine-lined quality first editions printed in Rome, and in one case ("Palazzo Consulta") a second edition printed by his son in Paris. All have the usual vertical center fold and are the sought-after museum quality and condition etchings.
